Planetary Resources has a dream. It wants to mine and process asteroids in support of colonizing space.
One big step to making that dream come true is learning to utilize materials that are already in space. Working toward that goal, Planetary Resources, in collaboration with 3D Systems, accomplished a 3D printing first.
Using metals obtained from a meteorite, they produced the worlds first 3D printed item from an asteroid. This story is about a year old, but still, it reminds us that it is an amazing and exciting time to be alive. The first step in preparing the meteorite for DMP (Direct Metal Printing) was to melt it under vacuum and then gas atomize it into a powder. This was done by Allegheny Technologies, Inc. (ATI) at their ATI Powder Metals research facility in Pittsburgh, PA. Once completed, the powered was processed and then the piece was printed using 3D System's ProX DMP 320 metals 3D printer. This interview is really interesting and worth the time it takes to watch it. Let us know what you think in the comment section.
